Amendments to Grenada’s Road Traffic Act Coming
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, JULY 5, 2017 (GIS): – Serious considerations are being given to some amendments to Grenada’s Road Traffic Act CAP. 289A, as efforts are being made to improve public safety on the nation’s roads.
Following a series of meetings with the most recent being June 26 this year, experts from the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Health and a top official from the Traffic Department, of the Royal Grenada Police Force, it was agreed that swift interventions are needed to curb escalating public concerns relating to alcohol, drugs, and the use of handheld mobile communication devices while driving or operating a motor vehicle.
At the meeting the experts examined the proposed amendments paying particular attention on how the enhanced legislation can positively address and significantly benefit the citizenry.
One of the salient issues considered was that of the introduction and use of medical technologies, devices and procedures that can be used to address the problems associated with drunken driving and or driving under the influence of alcohol and or a controlled drug, which contribute to loss of life, property and other serious social consequences.
The proposed amendments are expected to go before the Houses of Parliament before year end.
