Statement from Ambassador Arley Gill
St. George’s, December 1, 2021: Grenada’s Ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Arley Gill, says Barbados’s severing of ties with Britain to become a republic is a proud moment for the region.
Barbados’s transition to a republic, and its replacement of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth as head of state, took place on Tuesday. Barbadian Sandra Mason is the first president of the republic.
“Well done Barbados! You have made us proud!’’ Gill, who also is Chairman of the Grenada National Reparations Committee, said in a statement.
“Heartfelt congratulations to the government and people of the Republic of Barbados on their momentous transition to a republic,’’ the statement added. “This conscientious action by the people of Barbados reinforces and advances the independence of their nation and reaffirms the fact that our people can chart their own destiny. It is my fervent hope that, this action will inspire other nations, who still swear allegiance to the Queen, to follow the Barbados action and do
