Deficit of Implementation in Grenada’s Public Sector; Senior Public Officer
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, JULY 26th, 2022_There is a lack of will to implement in the Grenada public service.
According to a senior government official, the new administration in St. Georges has recognized the problem and has taken immediate steps to change the course of Grenada’s development.
He pointed to the creation of a Ministry of Mobilization, Implementation and Transformation (MIT) as an important response to that lack of will to implement projects and solutions that have been “sitting in the pipeline for many years.”
The new ministry is headed by businessman Andy Williams, who has given a commitment to the people of Grenada “to keep a keen eye” on making sure that government projects designed to improve the lives of the Grenadian people will be done in a “timely” manner.
Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has given his support to the new Minister and his team to “run roughshod” over any area of government activity that may be slow in implementing authorized projects that have already received financing but remain stalled.
“The purpose of the ministry is to ensure that we deliver”, the Prime Minister said.
The government official told the Barnacle there are several areas of government projects, ranging from education to digitization, to agriculture and infrastructure that have “been in the pipeline forever.”
“We are at risk of losing funding for many of these projects simply because we have either failed to act or are taking long to act,” the senior official in the Ministry of Finance said pointing to the fact that the administration is just over 30 days in office.
He said the government, 32 days after winning a general election, is already looking beyond its 5-year term. Describing some of the government’s plans as “ambitious” and “aspirational”, the senior official said efforts are being made to lay the groundwork to ensure these policies come to the fore in the government’s 2nd term.
“These plans have been deliberately designed that way because we recognize that we must first aspire if we wish to achieve,” he told the Barnacle.
