Dr. Keith Mitchell Sworn in & Calls for Togetherness
Friday 16 March 2018 proved to be yet another historic moment for Dr. the Rt. Keith Mitchell, as he was sworn in for the 5th time as Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Grenada Trade Center, which was packed with delegates, official members of the New National Party (NNP), supporters and on-lookers.
After being congratulated by Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade, Prime Minister Mitchell addressed the gathering, and called on the Grenadian public to pray for him and his administration.
During Dr. Mitchell’s address, he stated that he knows he can never repay the nation, but he will certainly try his utmost best, as he comes with a sincere heart and strong determination. According to him, what motivates him most, is knowing where he came from and knowing where Grenadians can go together. Therefore, he remains committed to leading a “united nation,” and called upon the leadership of the defeated National Democratic Congress (NDC) as well as their supporters, to come together, as “this nation belongs to all of us.” The PM urged the the leader of the NDC to take this proposal seriously.
According to Dr Mitchell, at this juncture, the aim should be to lead supporters out of what he referred to as extreme partisanship.
Although the NDC lost the general elections, they received over 20,000 votes, and Prime Minister Mitchell has indicated that he accepts that they have the fundamental right to their views and preferences. However, the electoral battle is over, and Grenadians must now come together to build the nation. Grenadian patriots know no colour. They are guided by their conscience and their own sense of family and community,” Dr. Mitchell insisted.
He went on to reiterate that the power lies in the hands of the people. “This victory that we had on Tuesday, won’t mean anything at all unless by the end of the next term in Government, we lift our people out of poverty, send a lot more people back to work, empower families and we make every Grenadian proud of us.
Dr. Mitchell affirmed his commitment to working together with the business community, churches, youth and students, trade union movements as well as social organizations. He maintained his interest in the nation’s health sector, which, according to him, plays an imperative role in any nation, and, no political party must attempt to score “cheap political points when it comes to healthcare.”
Speaking about the youth, Dr. Mitchell stated that the task at hand now is to build a future that is for the next generation to come. “They are depending on us [and] we cannot let them down.”
Mitchell’s Address was met with rounds of applauds, cheers and standing ovations from many patrons.
The Ministers and Senators will be selected and sworn in at a later date.
