Fifteen Teams to Contest the Inaugural GFA U19 League
28th February, 2017, St.George’s, Grenada – Fifteen teams completed the registration process and are excited about contesting the inaugural GFA U19 League. The League will kick off at 2pm on Saturday 4th March at Queen’s Park with a double header. The teams contesting the league are: Fontenoy United, Combined Northerners, Morne Jaloux, Eagles Super Strikers, St. Johns Sports, Sunsetters SC, Paradise FC, Mt. Horne FC, GBSS, Springs FC, Bellevue Rangers, Queens Park Rangers, Mt. Rich, Hard Rock and Hurricanes SC.
At a press conference held on Tuesday, GFA Competitions Officer Bruce Swan said the competition will be played in two zones: one zone with eight (8) teams and the other with seven (7) teams. He said four (4) teams will qualify for the quarterfinal knockout stage. The final is carded for April 29th which will see the opening of the GFA season.
Swan told members of the media, “The league will give young players more opportunities to play the game. It will also provide the GFA with a scouting platform to choose players for the U19 national team.”
The League will be played mostly on weekends at a limited number of playing fields due to the athletic season. These fields include Queens Park, Plains, Bellevue, Beausejour, Victoria Park and Cuthbert Peters Park.
Meanwhile, Chantimelle SC to Play North Stars in the GFA Promotion/Relegation Playoff.
The long awaited home and away playoff between Chantimelle SC and North Stars will take place on later on in the month of March. The announcement was made by GFA Competitions Officer Bruce Swan on Tuesday. The first match at Plains is carded for 19th March while the second match is carded for the 26th. Chantimelle Sc was previously carded to play GBSS, however a decision was taken to maintain the 2016 regulations in which 7th place in the Premier League Chantimelle will play 4th place in the Conference League North Stars.
