November 1, 2017, St. George, Grenada. With just under 10 days to go before the start of the 2017 OECS Swim Championship our national swimmers have been training day and night as they prepare for what is anticipated to be a highly competitive event. Through the assistance of the Grenada Olympic Association (GOC), the Grenada Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has engaged a US based stroke specialist swim coach, with extensive experience to assist the national coach with the final preparations of our swim team for the upcoming OECS Swim Championship in St. Lucia and other regional swim meets in 2018.

Over the past few months many of our National Swimmers have engaged in initiatives to improve their overall physical strength and general fitness level.  This initiative combined with their ongoing swim programme, coupled with the recent addition of coaching support from the swim specialist focusing on stroke technique, starts, turns and body positioning, along with the ongoing general motivational development has resulted in tremendous growth of our National Swimmers.  GASA President, Peron Johnson says, “Our swimmers are technically, physically and mentally ready to face the intense competition expected at OECS in under 10 days. “

The OECS Swim Championships brings together the best swimmers from across the OECS region in keen rivalry and competition and this year will be no exception.  “The Championship trophy has moved between Grenada and St. Lucia for the past 26 years, with each county having won the championship title 13 times, but this year is particularly important to our team.  Grenada currently holds the OECS title for 2015 and 2016, and we are gunning for a third consecutive title in 2017”, says GASA President Johnson.  If achieved Grenada will be the first country to ever win the OECS title for 3 consecutive years.

Former Olympian Oreoluwa Cherebin, and Senior Swimmer Delron Felix will lead the 34 member team with two alternate swimmers as they depart the island starting Wednesday November 8th for St. Lucia.  We look forward to personal best performance from all our swimmers and the achievement of the team’s goal to bring back to Grenada the OECS Championship title for the third consecutive year.
