Message by Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell- International Public Service Day 2020
Fellow Grenadians, I take this opportunity to salute all Public Sector workers. On behalf of the Government and people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, I thank you for your work during this uncertain and changing period. The COVID-19 pandemic has created yet another test of the resilience of our society, our economy, and especially the capacity of our government and the public service to respond, to make decisions and to get them right.
Today, we observe International Public Service Day 2020 amidst a global pandemic; under the theme, Action Today, Impact Tomorrow: Innovating and Transforming Public Services and Institutions to Realize the SDGs.
COVID-19 abruptly upended our lives. We had to rapidly adjust our daily routines to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our fellow citizens from the deadly impact of this highly infectious disease. These are, without a doubt, extraordinary times. And, once again, many of you have risen to the occasion. You have been asked to step up and many of you have. To the workers on the frontline of this pandemic, whether you are working in healthcare or delivering essential services in the areas of sanitation, social welfare, education, transport, law enforcement – many of you have been doing an outstanding job; as are many of you in other service areas, directly impacting the lives of the Grenadian public. We call on those who are not doing their fair share, to do so now.
COVID-19 has thrust the Public Service into the spotlight, creating the catalyst for change, change which is only possible through the commitment and dedication of public officers. The role of a public officer comes with great responsibility, particularly in today’s environment. Today, I challenge you to recognise that this change begins with each and every one of you. I challenge you to see that new future and to embrace it. This transformation is now a reality, and it has only just begun. The future is now!
Grenada’s recovery and continued growth rely on your resilience, agility, innovation and commitment to service. I will be asking more of you in the coming months as we work together to build our country back – better and stronger. We are all in this together. We will get through this together. Know that your hard work is seen and truly appreciated. I thank you!
