Prime Minister Congratulates Kittitian Counterpart on Securing Second Term in Office

June 8, 2020 – Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, has congratulated his colleague in St. Kitts and Nevis, who was sworn in Sunday for a second term in office.
Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Timothy Harris, secured victory at the polls on Friday, as the Team Unity coalition which he led, claimed nine of the eleven seats contested.
Dr. Mitchell said, “I have personally spoken to my colleague to extend congratulations to him and his team. The electorate has clearly spoken and I wish them another five years of successfully governing St. Kitts and Nevis and bringing further development to the country and its people.”
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the physical distance that is recommended as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the virus, the just concluded election campaign in St. Kitts and Nevis was one with a difference.
Dr. Mitchell commented on this saying, “The COVID-19 pandemic calls on us to do things differently; we all have to find creative ways to achieve our development agenda and in the case of the just concluded elections, to woo the electorate. Despite the challenges the pandemic presents, it is important that the democratic process and good governance prevail. Without the usual type of engagement that rallies allow, I think the election result also speaks to the confidence of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis in their government’s handling of the pandemic. The electorate deserves particular commendation for turning out to vote in Friday’s election in the midst of a pandemic. I wish the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis continued success in the fight against COVID-19 and in the ongoing process of nation-building as they embark on the next five years of development.”
The Prime Minister has also encouraged his colleague to continue to push for unity among his people. He said, “The re-elected administration has been given an excellent opportunity to further unite the people of their country in the furtherance of development. It is well known that in unity, there is strength, a statement that is also applicable at the regional level and I encourage Dr. Harris to continue playing an active role in the CARICOM family as we pursue deeper integration of our Caribbean community.”
