SGU Records Peak Numbers for 2018 Career Day
Giving students and young adults the opportunity to make informed decisions about their educational and career paths, remains at the pinnacle of the St George’s University (SGU) mandate.
For 12 years, since the commencement of the University’s annual Career Day, which is done in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Grenada, SGU continues to extend its reach and open its doors to hundreds of young students. On this particular day, students, teachers and parents are all welcomed to the University’s True Blue Campus where interactive presentations and sessions are set up.
One of the main reason behind the Career Day is to give students suggestions about the multitude of ideas that surround them. It also gives the presenters a chance to share their struggles and successes with the students.
Interested students usually get the opportunity to learn more about specific fields from professionals in the said fields. This year, a wide variety of professional fields were represented, including Medicine; Nursing; Physiotherapy; Veterinary Medicine; Marine Biology; Careers in the Legal Profession; Social Work; Accounting; Yachting; Interior Decorating; Visual Arts; Agriculture; Entrepreneurship; Tourism & Hospitality Management; Culinary Arts and Information Technology. As a result of the diversity of fields offered, the University recorded its highest attendance rate of over 2500 participants.
During the sessions students were given a chance to ask questions, take notes and expand their knowledge in the various fields, based on their interests.
Speaking to the Barnacle about the University’s contribution to and expectations of the event, was Assistant Dean of Enrollment Planning, Mr. Colin Dowe. He proudly confirmed that this was indeed the largest group of participants they have had over the years. “While our recruitment objectives can be met, we challenge participants to Think Beyond the traditional as they carve out productive career paths.”
He went on to say, “SGU is not only an educational institution, but it is one of Grenada’s biggest employers. Career Day recognizes both facets of the institution. The University’s programs are highlighted to signal the opportunities available while a focus is also placed on non-traditional and emerging careers aimed at satisfying national needs and the diversified aspirations of Grenada’s youth.”
An interactive session for parents and guardians was also held at the Campus. There, parents received the opportunity to dialogue with presenters such as Mr. Richard Duncan, Mr. Cecil Noel
