St. Louis Girls RC Gets an Upgraded Computer Lab
Students and teachers at the St. Louis Girls RC School are on their way to becoming more tech-savvy, as their resource lab was given a much-need upgrade by MiSIT, an undergraduate student organization, from the St. George’s University (SGU).
The School received a number of new items including batteries, water-proof ethernet cables, a network switch, a new modem, a paint job along with other bits and pieces that they required, costing just over $3000.
President of MiSIT, Toni Davis, addressed the students during their Monday morning assembly. She encouraged the students to take the path of technology, saying that there are many opportunities in the field. “I believe that we nee a lot of females in the field of technology…the men tend to outshine us,” she told the young girls.
She further went on to list some of the careers available, including Hardware and Software Developers, Programmers as she charged gathering to “Think big. Dream big and never stop dreaming.”
Popularly known as MiSIT (Management Information Technology/ Information Technology), the organization has been around for approximately 10 years. However, this is their first time venturing into one of the nation’s primary schools. “MiSIT usually visits the secondary schools of the nation informing them on reasons they should chose information technology,” Davis told the Media.
When questioned about their choice of school, David commented, “We just heard that they had a need, and we wanted to fulfill that need.” Additionally, “we decided that we should do it from an early stage [in] primary school, so that if they get the necessary tools in order to be exposed to technology then probably we’ll have more IT people in the field.”
Principal of the School, Mrs. Christiana Lashington, used the occasion to thank MiSIT and reiterate the importance of the Resource Center (Lab) in the development of communication opportunities. One of the students, commended MiSIT for their efforts in assisting the school through the upgrade of the computer room.
