Strengthening the Power of Play
Sandals Foundation and Catherine Cecilia Foundation gifts learning and play resources to schools
Grenada- November 16, 2022- Understanding the power of play in the cognitive and overall holistic development of students, the Sandals Foundation recently collaborated with the local and diaspora- based charitable organization – Catherine Cecilia Foundation to donate sporting and play supplies to the South St. George Government School.
The items, which include footballs, basketballs, skipping ropes, table tennis gear, cones, and whistles, were identified as critically needed to engage students in targeted physical activity. An assortment of stationery supplies donated by guests of Sandals Grenada were also donated.
Speaking at South St. George Government School, Public Relations Manager at Sandals Grenada Resort, Deleon Forrester shared the genesis of this positive partnership, “I was invited by the Catherine Cecilia Foundation to visit the school a few months ago, and upon visiting, Mr. Adams (longstanding principal) requested physical education gear. I knew this was something our Sandals guests would happily donate if they knew it was needed. An incoming, repeat Sandals Grenada guest committed to supplying the items and here we are weeks later handing over to the school.”
Play is a critical component in the educational and personal development of students – helping to improve comprehension, physical, social and the emotional well-being of children.
Calisha Purcell-Charles, founder of The Catherine Cecilia Foundation stated, “We are dedicated to building stronger communities from the root up. We are honored to provide South St. George Government School with academic and sporting supplies. We are committed to supporting teachers and helping the children to grow and flourish socially, academically and physically.”
She continued, “The members and I are happy to partner with the Sandals Foundation and we look forward to continued collaboration in changing lives and supporting communities. We enjoy the school family at South St. George Government School and we are excited to continue this relationship.”
The school population, of just over 400 students, will also benefit from a further commitment from the two organizations to add swings, and benches to enhance their outdoor- socialization space in time for the new school term. Principal, Davis Adams expressed gratitude, “On behalf of the students and teachers of South St. George, we express a heartfelt thank you for this boost to the physical education programme of our school, and for the additional supplies that are always needed. We will put it all to good use as we continue to provide the best possible experience and environment for our children to succeed.”
