TAMCC Eyes Championship as the 2019 Windward Islands Debating Competition Moves to Grenada
The T.A. Marryshow Community College (TAMCC) will be participating in the Third Windward Islands Debating Competition which will be at the Grenada Trade Centre, Morne Rouge, St. George’s Grenada on March 1st and 2nd, 2019.
TAMCC will be represented by Mr Jevon John, Ms Ti’ara Joseph, Ms Carina Blache and Mr Wesley Simon, along with other supporting members. The team is being led and coached by Ms Besha Ottley and Mrs Merlisia Polius- John.
Ms Carina Blache and Ms Ti’ara Joseph have both captured the coveted title of “Best Debaters” at the Grenlec Debates in 2015 and 2017 respectfully. Mr Wesley Simon and Mr Jevon John were both members of the PBC debating team who won the Grenlec debate in 2017.
The other teams participating in the competition are:
Dominica State College (DSC), defending champions
Sir. Arthur Lewis Community College, St. Lucia (SALCC);
St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC);
The stated aim of the debate competition is to reinforce the multidisciplinary approach necessary to assess the needs of the Caribbean and to foster critical thinkers who will help to shape the democratic societies of the Caribbean. The competition is also aimed at promoting regional, collegial information-sharing and cultural exchanges.
As a result the debate topics are usually chosen to focus on current issues pertinent to the Caribbean region. This year’s topics are
Semi Final Topics:
Public Private Partnerships are the most viable methods of financing development projects in the OECS.
The current education system in the region is based on a curriculum which adequately prepares students for jobs of the future.
Final Topic:
It is in Caricom’s best interest to help Venezuela get out of its current economic morass.
Over the past two years TAMCC has participated in the debates which were held in St. Lucia in 2017 and St. Vincent in 2018 and placed second and third respectively.
Friday’s round of debates will be from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm while Saturday’s matched will be from 9:00am – 11:00 pm.
The general public is encouraged to come to the Trade Centre to support the local team.
