Westmorland Swimmer Takes Top Spot at 2018 CPEA
The nerve-wrecking wait is finally over for the nations’ students who sat the 2018 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA), as the results were circulated on Monday 11 June 2018.
Topping the 2018 Assessment was Joshua Wilson-Dumont from Westmorland Junior School with a whopping 481 points. He was followed by Joshua Noel from St Mary’s Junior School who amassed a total of 477 points. Following the two young boys was Mya Carter representing the St George’s Anglican Senior School, in third place with 474 points. Onri Roberts, of St Joseph’s RC placed fourth with 472 points.
The Barnacle News Team spoke briefly with the Principal of the Westmorland Junior School, Mrs Samantha Antoine-Purcell, who was elated and pleased with her students’ performance. The have received yet another 100% pass rate, and according to Mrs Antoine-Purcell, “it is testament to the efforts of the teachers, the parental support and the quality of education delivered.” She added too that they were not shocked that Joshua Wilson-Dumont performed so well, in fact, “he is well known in the swimming circle and has always exceeded academically.”
At Westmorland Junior, they pride themselves on their students being able to thrive across the board, not just academically, the Principal noted as she extended congratulations to the Grade 6 students.
Also speaking to the Barnacle News Team, was Mr Christopher Glasgow, Grade 6 Class Teacher from St Mary’s Junior. According to him, all 20 of the students passed, with the majority attaining their first choice of secondary school, and as the Teacher, he is pleased with their performance.
The lone female who placed in the top 3, received commendations from her Class Teacher, Mrs Joycelyn De Gale. According to her, even though all of their students were not successful, they still feel “very blessed. We are very hard workers and we work as a team.”
This year, of the 2006 students who sat the Exam, 1808 were assigned to secondary schools; 916 males and 892 females. Therefore 198 students were unsuccessful and will get another opportunity to resit in 2019.
